What does Jutsu mean?
The word jutsu is a component of the Japanese language known as a morpheme. The meaning of jutsu translates to that of skill, method, or technique. In practice, the word Jutsu is only part of a single word. Jutsu is used in conjunction with a counterpart word and is popularly linked to traditional fighting methods or martial arts. For example, it is used in “kenjutsu”, the art of sword fighting.
In the Naruto universe, the jutsu term is most commonly repeated in the word “ninjutsu”, which references ninja combat skills and techniques. Jutsu in Naruto are powerful skills that ninja will learn to master and ultimately utilize in combat scenarios.
How is Jutsu used?
In order for the ninja to use jutsu, they must tap into their chakra energy reserves and perform the correct Hand Seal. There are two primary areas in which chakra is sourced from. There is a tertiary source as well, Nature Chakra, but we won’t go into that here.
- Body Chakra
- Spirit Chakra
Body chakra can be found inside of the billions of microscopic cells that make up the human body, while spirit chakra is energy that can be called upon through exercise and experience. When using jutsu, the practitioner must learn to release both of the chakra energies. During this process, there are many thousand combinations of hand seals that can be used. Once the proper hand seal has been performed and the chakra is released the jutsu will become activated.
There are multiple jutsu references in the Naruto universe, but each jutsu type is classified within a ranking system. Below we explain the 6 varying and distinct jutsu levels found in Naruto.
